This is Ernest Shackleton. He is a well known explorer. His first expedition was in 1901, but he was sent home due to illness. Determined to create a legacy, he led the Trans-Antarctic expedition. His ship was called the Endurance and it was unfortunately crushed by ice, in the middle of the expedition. They drifted on ice sheets for months, having to eat dogs for survival, until they reached Elephant Island. They stayed there for days. Shackleton hating to see his men suffer, set out to South Georgia with 5 others, where he travelled alone to a nearby whaling station. On the 25th of August 1916 Shackleton returned to his men, all of whom were alive, with good news.
Robert Falcon Scott is also a famous explorer who travelled to Antarctica. From 1901-1904, he led an expedition named the 'discovery expedition'. The ship 'Discovery' was built especially for this expedition, a wooden sailing ship. This was Ernest Shackleton's first expedition. The aim of the mission was to hopefully reach the south pole itself, or at least the furthest south anyone had managed before. The main party was of Scott, Wilson and Shackleton.
Terrible things occurred, such as, Shackleton beginning to suffer from scurvy, and Wilson, the doctor, suffering from snow blindness and at one point, having to pull a sledge blindfolded to ease the pain of looking into the light.
They turned back on December 31st 1902 having reached very far. They had travelled 300 miles farther south than anyone had before and were only 480 statute miles from the South Pole. However, they soon abandoned the idea of continuing home and continued on with their scientific work, staying where they were, Shackleton leaving because of the illness. Eventually they left, nearly leaving the ship 'Discovery' behind, but in the end, managing to break it free from the ice surrounding the ship.
